here is a website devoted to the goodness and antics of the Calgary based collective The Summerwood Warren. They’ve been doing really great stuff in their local all ages scene at least since 2006. yo, cats!

the snow is melting! high performance rodeo was super fun, thanks to eeryone who was involved with that. Our restructuring thing has been going pretty well, right now the summerwood is all about super intense meetings where we geek out about things we really care about! namely: YOU, dear city brethren. stay tuned for our super sweet rivisions.

ALSO: planning for Choose Yer Own 2009 is underway! we are so stoked to see what everyone comes up with this year! as always, be sure to email us if you want to get involved.

as swell as hibernation is to our surly selves, we are actually busy working on a few nice things. it is still the true truth that we are, as a group, taking a break, burrowed deep deep under the ground, thinking and waiting. but in the meantime, these things float up to reassure you we are still around:

Hello dear friends

A lot of things are always changing. This is really heartbreaking, but it is also the most reassuring thing ever. don’t forget that.

We are going into a hibernation for a while, while we figure out what we want to do with ourselves again. we will be a different thing when we come out again, but we will still be committed to fun, community, and making things, so don’t worry or anything.

October 18th marked the end of just over two years of monthly programming at the lovely EMMEDIA, who have helped us out and supported us muchly in these early years. We owe a great deal to them, and would like to offer them an ongoing, gargantuan, thank you. Also to everyone who’s been involved with those shows, they were the most brilliantly heartbreakingly beautiful things. messy and extreme, that energy was well spent. As nostalgic and heart-achy as I already feel about them ending, there is something to be said for ending things well. And the last show, themed “Thanks Giving” ( as a giant THANK YOU) was about the best sort of ending anyone could have hoped for. so thanks.

you break my heart with all your goodness. Wherever you all end up, good friends, keep up that brilliant goodness. You have been a serious gift to everything. I am speaking especially to those (many) of you who are leaving or who’ve left, but it stands for the rest of you, as well. We were here when it happened, and now you will carry it around with you. just keep it golden, keep it brave. we will see you later. best of luck with everything in the meantime.

A Summerwood Warren Festival

This blog will tell you about Choose Yer Own, a festival presented by the Summerwood Warren. The festival will take place in Calgary, Alberta between August 7th and 11th. Choose Yer Own is a collaborative attempt to create a festival that is accessible and super awesome, with the idea that everyone chooses the shape and nature of their own involvement. As such, festival events were determined by an open call for submissions, and include everything from a bicycle parade and cardboard robot battles, to DJs with lemonade and breakfast with the landlord. There are also shows featuring work from local artists and performances from local DJs, musical sweethearts, and even Washington’s O Paon (formerly Woelv) of krecords.

we were going to sell passes, but most people’s events are free! awesome! Choose Yer Own is pretty bike oriented, we encourage you to visit the Good Life community bike shop for bicycle support and information.
